This article guides you through using the ResaleOS image editor to improve your product photos by removing backgrounds, setting colors, and adding shadows.

Edit listing photos in ResaleOS: remove backgrounds, set colors, add shadows

ResaleOS includes a built-in image editor for every product photo. You can remove backgrounds for free (unlimited), change the background color, and add a clean shadow. Use it to make your cover photo stand out and meet marketplace requirements.

Step 1: Open a product and pick an image

  1. Go to Inventory in ResaleOS.
  2. Open any product you want to edit.
  3. Click the photo you want to clean up to open the image tools.
Tip: Start with your best, well-lit photo. This will likely become your cover image on marketplaces.

Step 2: Remove the background (free, unlimited)

  1. Click Edit on the selected photo.
  2. Choose Remove Background.
  3. Wait a moment for the preview. Check edges around the item.
  4. Click Apply to confirm.
Note: Background removal is included for all users with unlimited credits. If the cutout isn’t perfect on the first try, run Remove Background again or try a different source photo with stronger contrast.

Step 3: Set a clean background color

  1. Open Background Color in the editor.
  2. Pick a color from the palette or enter your brand color.
  3. Preview how your item looks on that background.
Tip: Many marketplaces prefer pure white for the main image. White also helps your item pop in search results.

Step 4: Add a natural shadow

  1. Toggle Shadow in the editor.
  2. If controls are available, adjust intensity to keep it subtle and realistic.
  3. Preview from edge to edge to avoid harsh halos.
Tip: A light shadow can make flat lays look more dimensional without distracting from the item.

Step 5: Apply, set as placeholder image, and save

  1. Click Apply to lock in your edits.
  2. Click Set as Placeholder (this sets the edited photo as the primary/cover image for the item).
  3. Click Save to finish.
Why this matters: The placeholder image is the first photo buyers see when you cross-list. Make it clean, bright, and centered.

Where you can use the editor

  • Any image on a product in your Inventory or drafts.
  • While prepping listings you plan to cross-list to eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, Mercari, Shopify, Facebook Marketplace, and more.
  • Any time you want to refresh photos before relisting or promoting.

Practical tips for better results

  • Shoot with good, even light. The AI cutout works best with clear edges and low shadows.
  • Center the item and leave some margin so edges aren’t cropped after background removal.
  • Use white or a light neutral background for main images; save colored or styled backgrounds for secondary photos.
  • Keep resolution high so marketplaces don’t compress too much.
  • Stay consistent across your catalog to create a trustworthy storefront look.

Troubleshooting

  • Don’t see the change? Make sure you clicked Apply, then Save.
  • Edges look rough? Try Remove Background again or switch to a source photo with better contrast from the background.
  • Placeholder didn’t update? Confirm you clicked Set as Placeholder on the edited image before saving.
  • Taking a long time? Large images may need a few extra seconds to process.
