The Best POS for a Consignment Boutique That Also Sells Online

Most of a boutique's rack exists once. The right POS sells it once, wherever it sells, and pays the consignor the same either way.

The Best POS for a Consignment Boutique That Also Sells Online
The short version

The best POS for a consignment boutique that also sells online keeps one record per item across the register, your website and every marketplace, and works out the consignor split on every sale, wherever it happens. Consignment-first systems like ConsignCloud, SimpleConsign and Ricochet do the split well and connect to Shopify or their own webstore. ResaleOS adds marketplace crosslisting on the same inventory, so a piece sold on the floor comes off eBay, Poshmark and your Shopify store too.

A boutique has a problem a thrift store mostly doesn't: most of the rack is one-of-one. A designer bag exists once. If it sells at the counter at 2pm and is still live on your website at 2:05, someone can buy it twice, and now you're refunding a customer and apologising. Add a consignor who expects their share no matter where the bag sold, and the POS stops being a cash register. It becomes the record of who owns what and where it is listed.

This guide is about that one problem: one inventory across the floor, your website and the marketplaces, with the split right on every channel. For hardware costs, see the real cost of a consignment store hardware stack. For card fees, see the $12 ticket problem.

What a boutique POS must do

Use this as a checklist when you sit through demos. Ask to see each one, not hear about it.

01

One record per item, everywhere

The item on the rack, on your website and on each marketplace should be the same record, not three copies you keep in step by hand.

02

Sold once, gone everywhere

A sale on any channel should pull the piece from every other channel automatically. Ask how fast, and whether it depends on the channel.

03

The split on every channel

An online order should credit the consignor exactly like a counter sale, including tiered splits and fees, with no export or re-keying.

04

Discounts that land on the right person

When you mark something down, you should choose whether the store, the consignor or both absorb it.

05

Payouts and a consignor view

Balances, payout runs and a portal so consignors can check their items without calling the shop.

06

Tags and a fast counter

Barcode labels at intake, scan-to-cart at the register, split tenders, store credit and gift cards.

07

A website you don't re-type into

Either a built-in storefront or a Shopify connection that pushes the item for you, with photos, price and size.

Where boutiques lose money between channels

Most double-sells come from the gap between two systems, not from a bad POS. A typical setup is a consignment POS in the shop, Shopify for the website and a few items posted to eBay or Poshmark by hand. Each link is a place where stock can drift:

  • Floor to website. Works if the POS has a real Shopify sync. Check whether online sales come back as normal sales with the split applied, or land in a separate report you reconcile.
  • Website to marketplaces. Usually nothing connects these. Staff delist by hand after a sale, and that is where the second buyer sneaks in.
  • Marketplace to consignor. An eBay sale entered by hand later is a sale that can be keyed with the wrong split, or forgotten.

The fix is to have fewer systems, or to make sure every system writes into the same inventory. Here is how the main options handle it.

The options, one by one

Each of these is a good fit for some boutique. The question is where your sales come from now, and where you want them to come from next year.

ResaleOS

Best for boutiques selling in-store, on their own site and on marketplaces

The register, the website and the marketplaces all sell from one inventory. A counter sale writes the same sale record as an eBay order or a website checkout: stock comes down, the item comes off the other channels it was listed on, and the consignor's cut lands on their balance. Split rules work per line, and at the counter you choose whether a discount comes out of the store's share, the consignor's or both.

You can sell online two ways, and use both: a built-in storefront with checkout paid into your Stripe account, or a Shopify connection that publishes the item and keeps stock in sync. A Shopify setting keeps a sold piece on your storefront as sold out instead of removing it. The same item can be crosslisted to eBay, Poshmark, Depop, Etsy, Mercari, Facebook Marketplace, Chairish, Vestiaire Collective and more.

The register takes Stripe, Square or Revolut card readers. With no reader, card is recorded as a tender and you run it on whatever you use today.

Price: POS is on the Reseller plan ($89.99/month) and Pro ($219.99/month). The first 30 days are $1.

Limits: No offline mode, so a sale needs a connection. Scanning at the till uses a USB or Bluetooth scanner, not a phone camera. Reseller includes 500 cross-listings a month; automatic sales tax is on Pro. How fast an item comes off a marketplace depends on that marketplace.

ConsignCloud

Best for in-store-first shops that sell online through Shopify

A mature consignment POS with a Shopify and Square integration on its Basic plan. Its help center says the Shopify sync covers inventory and account balances, and a Shopify sale updates the consignor's balance. It also says the sync is fast but not instant.

Price: Basic $139/month; Pro $189/month per location adds the consignor portal.

Limits: Its pricing page doesn't list marketplace crosslisting. Your website runs on Shopify or Square, so that is a second subscription.

SimpleConsign

Best for established stores that want a long-running consignment system

A well-known consignment POS with integrated payments, reward points and, on higher plans, ACH payouts and a consignor portal. The Shopify integration is on the Professional plan. Its help center says online sales come in through an Online Sales Report rather than as in-store transactions.

Price: Basic $159, Standard $259, Professional $359 a month. A launch offer prices Professional at $99/month for six months or until $50K in sales.

Limits: Shopify only on the top plan. Marketplace crosslisting isn't listed.

Ricochet

Best for shops happy with one built-in webstore

A consignment-first POS with its own webstore, Ricochet Web, on the Reach plan and up. The Shopify integration is a paid add-on for Shopify plans above Basic, and each item is toggled to Shopify. Payments run through RicochetPay, with a lower rate on higher plans.

Price: Core $99, Reach $149, Lead $199 a month. RicochetPay is 3.29% to 2.69% + 10¢ depending on plan.

Limits: Its integrations page lists no marketplaces. Keeping your own processor costs $100/month on Lead.

Shopify POS with a consignment app

Best if your website is the business and the shop is the showroom

Shopify's own POS shares one inventory with your Shopify store by design, so floor-to-website double-sells are the easiest problem here. Consignment isn't built in. Splits, payouts and consignor accounts come from a third-party app, so ask how the app handles returns and discounts.

Price: Your Shopify plan, plus POS Pro at $89 per location per month.

Limits: Two vendors to support you, and marketplace selling needs more apps.

Square or Lightspeed

Best for boutiques that buy outright and don't consign

Both are strong retail POS systems with their own online stores. Square's plans are $0, $49 or $149 per location per month, and in-person cards are 2.6% + 15¢ on the free plan. Lightspeed Retail lists plans from $89 to $289 a month with eCommerce built in.

Limits: Neither lists consignor splits or payouts on its pricing page. If you consign, you'd run them next to consignment software and reconcile. See consignment software for Square and Shopify.

How to choose

  • Mostly in-store, a little Shopify: ConsignCloud, SimpleConsign Professional or Ricochet with its Shopify add-on are all proven.
  • Website-led, consignment on the side: Shopify POS plus a consignment app keeps the website at the centre.
  • Floor, website and marketplaces: pick a system that holds one inventory for all three, so you aren't stitching tools together. That is what ResaleOS is built for.
  • No consignors: Square or Lightspeed is simpler and cheaper.

Whatever you pick, test the hard case in the demo. Ring up a consigned item at the counter, then check the website and a marketplace listing. Then refund it and check again. If the demo needs a spreadsheet to explain, so will your Tuesdays.

Switching systems

ResaleOS imports from SimpleConsign, ConsignCloud, Ricochet, Liberty and Circle Hand, including consignors and balances. See how the point of sale works and ResaleOS for consignment stores.

See one inventory across the floor and the web

Ring a test sale at the register, watch it come off your website and your marketplaces, and check the consignor's balance. First 30 days are $1.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best POS system for a consignment boutique that also sells online?

Pick one that keeps a single record per item across the register, website and marketplaces, and applies the consignor split on every channel. ConsignCloud, SimpleConsign and Ricochet are strong in-store and connect to Shopify or a webstore. ResaleOS also crosslists the same inventory to marketplaces like eBay and Poshmark and delists it everywhere when it sells.

What resale shop software syncs an in-store POS with a Shopify website?

ConsignCloud includes a Shopify integration on its Basic plan, SimpleConsign on its Professional plan, and Ricochet as a paid add-on. ResaleOS connects to Shopify on the same inventory as its register and can also publish to marketplaces. Shopify POS shares inventory with Shopify natively but needs an app for consignment.

What software should a luxury or designer consignment store use?

Designer stock is mostly one-of-one and high value, so double-sells and wrong splits cost the most. Look for automatic delisting on every channel, per-item consignor splits, and a reach into luxury marketplaces. ResaleOS lists to Vestiaire Collective, Chairish, eBay and others from the same inventory as the register.

How do I stop selling the same item twice in-store and online?

Sell from one inventory. When any channel records a sale, the system should pull the item from every other channel without staff stepping in. Hand-delisting after a counter sale is the most common cause of double-sells.

Do consignors get paid the same on online sales?

They should. In ResaleOS a website or marketplace order is a normal sale, so the consignor's split lands on their balance exactly as a counter sale does. With other systems, check whether online sales come in as normal sales or through a separate report.

Can I keep my card reader?

ResaleOS works with Stripe, Square and Revolut readers, or records card as a tender if you run cards on a separate terminal. ConsignCloud supports Stripe or Gravity, and Ricochet lets Lead plans keep their own processor for $100/month.
