This small antique Chinese table cabinet has survived more than a century intact — its deep oxblood lacquer worn at the edges, its brass fittings darkened with age, its gilt court figures still telling their story across the double doors. It arrived from another era and it shows. That’s exactly the point.

THE PIECE

A late Qing Dynasty table cabinet, hand-lacquered in rich cinnabar red with gilt incised decoration on every exterior surface. Double doors open to reveal two interior compartments divided by a fixed shelf — plain, honest wood inside, all the artistry saved for the outside.

The front doors depict robed court figures in a palace garden scene, framed by geometric fret borders and ruyi cloud scrollwork. The drawer below carries a shou (寿) longevity symbol — one of the most beloved motifs in Chinese decorative arts, representing long life and good fortune. Dragon-form cloud scrolls crown the top rail.

All original brass hardware: a shaped butterfly clasp with dual ring pulls on the doors, and a delicate flower-form ring pull on the drawer. Everything functions as it should.

Untouched. Unrestored. Exactly as found.

The lacquer shows significant wear and loss at the corners and base — the beautiful, honest kind that only a century of existence can produce. The surface crazing is characteristic of genuine aged Chinese lacquerwork. No refinishing, no touch-ups, no apologies.
