Reel-to-reel audio tape was a dominant format for recording and playback of sound from the 1940s through the 1970s. Before the widespread adoption of cassette tapes and vinyl LPs for commercial distribution, reel-to-reel tapes were used for everything from professional studio recordings to home audio enthusiasts. The format offered high fidelity sound quality but was cumbersome to handle and store. Age appropriate wear to case Commercial releases on reel-to-reel were less common than LPs, often targeted at audiophiles or for specific distribution channels.
