A wonderful antiquarian find! The Abbot by Sir Walter Scott, published by Frank F. Lovell and Company, New York, in their handsome Aldine Edition. Printed and bound by Trow’s Printing and Bookbinding Company, New York — a mark of quality printing from the era.

The cloth cover features stunning ornate embossed scrollwork in a two-tone brown design with gilt spine lettering — a beautiful example of Victorian-era decorative bookbinding. The spine reads “The Abbot / Scott / Aldine Edition / F. Lovell & Co.”

The front matter bears two period inscriptions: a pencil signature reading Harry Reynolds, Granville, N.Y. and a stamp reading Miss Charlotte Reynolds lovely provenance adding to the charm and history of this volume.

The Abbot is a historical novel set around Mary Queen of Scots, a sequel to The Monastery, and features an engraved frontispiece of Lochleven Castle.
