A substantial and atmospheric piece of hand-thrown studio stoneware, almost certainly Danish in origin and dating to the 1960s–70s. Standing approximately 9.5 inches tall, this vase commands attention with its richly textured sgraffito decoration wrapping the entire body — a technique in which white slip is applied and then carved through to reveal the warm iron-brown clay beneath, with cobalt blue accents adding depth throughout.

Three narrative panels encircle the vessel: a stylized folk figure — knight or warrior — in motion; a bold branching tree heavy with seed pods or berries; and a radiant sun disc surrounded by leaf forms. The imagery has the quality of illuminated manuscript meets Scandinavian folk tradition, executed with confident, expressive hands.

The neck and shoulder carry a dramatic gunmetal-dark glaze that transitions beautifully into the textured decoration below. The unglazed speckled stoneware foot is characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian studio work, and the piece bears a hand-incised artist’s cipher — scratched through the glaze before firing — reading as a ligature “SA” or “AS,” consistent with Danish studio pottery signing conventions of the period.

A weep hole in the base suggests original dual use as planter or decorative vessel. There is a fired-in crack to the base — stable, structural, and honestly earned over six decades of existence.
