Antique Imperial Russian Hand-Painted Papier-Mâché Lacquer Box with Winter Troika Scene

A beautiful late Imperial Russian papier-mâché lacquer box dating to approximately 1890–1917. The hinged rectangular box features a finely hand-painted winter troika scene depicting three horses pulling a sleigh carrying bundled passengers through a snowy village landscape.

The artwork displays visible brushwork beneath the original lacquer and has developed an attractive age-related craquelure consistent with authentic late 19th- and early 20th-century Russian lacquerware. The interior retains its original silver-gray faux-tin painted finish, while the exterior is finished in traditional black lacquer.
