This beautiful hand-thrown stoneware vessel comes from the studio of renowned potter Marc Lemieux of Black Dog Pottery. It features a signature "thumbprint" or ribbed texture on the lower half, finished in a satin purple glaze, making it the perfect mug. The flared rim is decorated with a stunning reactive drip glaze in high-gloss cobalt blue and earthy tan tones.

The piece is marked on the bottom with the distinctive Black Dog Pottery impressed stamp (featuring a hound profile). The interior is fully glazed, making it suitable for fresh flowers or as a small planter.

About the artist:

While Marc Lemieux began his journey in 1990, he officially opened Black Dog Pottery in 1999 after returning from the Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver.

The Mark: The specific impressed stamp with the hound profile and the "Black Dog Pottery" text became his primary identifier right at the launch of the studio.

The Glaze Style: The reactive, multi-tonal drip glaze (like this purple and cobalt combo) was most prevalent in his work from up to early 2000s.

The "Shop Dog" Connection: The studio and the mark were inspired by his own black dogs (most recently one named Pepper).

This authentic studio piece dates to the early years of Marc Lemieux’s Black Dog Pottery (est. 1999). It features the original impressed hallmark inspired by the studio's namesake.

This is a wonderful piece of early 2000s Canadian studio art.
