*ABOUT THE ARTIST: GENE PAULSON

GENE PAULSON was a talented mid-century artist whose work is a cornerstone of the Midwest School of Watercolor. Trained at the UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA (U of M) during a golden era for the university’s art department, Paulson developed a signature style that blended rugged, outdoor realism with the fluid, expressive techniques of modern watercolor.

While he eventually became an established figure in the CHICAGO ART SCENE—working among the city's top illustrators and galleries—his heart remained in the "North." His time in Minnesota and Wisconsin deeply influenced his choice of subjects, ranging from serene lakeside landscapes to dynamic, action-oriented scenes of spearfishing, diving, and outdoor sports.

Paulson’s ability to capture the unique light and movement of the Northwoods made his work highly sought after by sportsmen and collectors of regional Americana. This piece, likely sold or exhibited through a professional Chicago-based gallery (as evidenced by the vintage contact info on the reverse), represents the peak of his career when he was bridging the gap between his Northern roots and the high-end art markets of the Midwest's largest metro hubs.

WHY COLLECT GENE PAULSON?

Paulson’s work is highly collectible for those who appreciate the Chicago School of mid-century painting. His ability to capture movement and light in outdoor subjects makes this a standout piece for nautical, sporting, or mid-century modern decor.
