Wedgwood Jasperware is a type of ceramic developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. It is characterized by its unglazed, matte finish and is typically made in a range of colors, with the most famous being a pale blue, but also including sage green, lilac, yellow, and black. The distinctive white bas-relief ornamentation, often depicting classical scenes, figures, or floral motifs, is applied to the colored body of the ceramic. This technique allows for intricate detailing and a luxurious appearance, making Jasperware highly sought after.

This particular piece is a lidded trinket box, shaped like a star and made from black Jasperware, also known as basalt ware. The white applied reliefs depict a scene, possibly mythological or allegorical, surrounded by floral elements. Such boxes were popular decorative items and functional containers for small valuables during the 19th and 20th centuries. The craftsmanship and iconic design are hallmarks of the Wedgwood brand, making it a collectible item.
