Wedgwood Jasperware is a type of unglazed, fine stoneware developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. It is characterized by its matte finish and the application of relief decorations, often in a contrasting color, typically white. The most famous Jasperware is the blue, but it was also produced in other colors, including black (basalt), green, lilac, and yellow.
This particular piece, being black jasperware with white relief, likely features a classical motif such as the grapevine, which was popular during the Neoclassical period and continued to be used by Wedgwood. These decorative items were produced in various forms, including plates, vases, and ornamental pieces, and remain highly collectible today.
