This 16th century mule chest is an antique item purchased in Brussels, Belgium. Made from solid wood, it features beautifully hand-carved details on the front and rich, dark tones. Chests with drawers in their base were known as mule chests, "mule" meaning hybrid of two pieces of furniture. The mule chest's functionality was similar to that of a pack mule, which carried various goods, making it a practical and versatile piece of furniture. This marks the first, primitive, attempt at the chest of drawers, the antique ancestor of the tallboy. Mule chests had traditional chest lids, as does this item, and the drawers were known at the time as tills or drawing boxes. This chest is missing its drawers.
