Rare mahogany Irish wake dining table. Width is 10 feet, depth 5 feet when both leaves are extended. It has twin drop leaves creating a large oval dining table, on ten tapering square legs, two on gateleg mechanisms, two leaves are 17.5 inches to each side. Wake tables are usually oval-shaped with drop-leaf flaps that fold down to make them narrow. This shape makes it easy to position the table against a wall. Wake tables were used to display the coffin of the deceased before burial. They were also used for funerary rituals that took place throughout the night. See
