This simple and poignant figure of the crucified Savior may have served as an object for devotion in a hacienda chapel during Spanish colonial times in Mexico. The artisan showed exquisite tenderness and devotion in crafting this image. The sculpted corpus of the crucified Jesus is 16" high and 15" wide. The cross including the base on which it is mounted is 17"wide, 29" tall and 5" deep at the base. The wood, gesso and polychrome body of Christ is Spanish colonial, probably 18th century. The vividly painted wooden cross and base are newer.10 percent of proceeds from sale of this and other items of religious art in the Lucía Landa Collection will be donated to provide scholarships to Our Lady of Guadalupe School, a K-8 school in Ferguson, Missouri, primarily serving Black and Hispanic children and families.
