An antique ink and watercolor painting on paper titled “The Nymph in the Lo River” by a Tang Artist after Ku-Kai Chi (Gu Kaizhi), who was one of the greatest Chinese Tang painters of the 4th century. An ethereal painting rendered in delicate red tones. The composition depicts a celestial journey through swirling clouds and mythical waters. The figures—likely deities or nymphs—ride a fantastical dragon-drawn chariot, surrounded by symbolic animals including phoenixes, deer, and carp, each detailed with classical elegance. With meticulous brushwork and poetic symbolism, the scene captures the timeless fusion of mythology and nature that defines early Chinese court painting. Red seals and calligraphy enhance its historical reverence, making this a rare tribute to one of China’s foundational artistic narratives.
Provenance: From the collection of Northwood University in Midland, Michigan; proceeds of the sale will go towards the University’s endowment. Dimensions: 26”h x 43”w x 1”d (framed). In very good vintage condition. Full condition reports are available upon request.
