Vintage Irish Blackthorn Shillelagh Presentation Cane
Presented to Bill Irwin by DuPont Maydown Works, Northern Ireland
Authentic Irish Blackthorn • Shamrock & Harp Carvings • Corporate Presentation Piece
Some antiques simply survive the passage of time. Others tell the story of a people, a tradition, and a place.
Offered here is a wonderful vintage Irish Blackthorn Shillelagh, presented to Bill Irwin by DuPont Maydown Works in Northern Ireland. Beautifully carved and personalized with an engraved brass presentation plaque, this piece represents the intersection of centuries-old Irish craftsmanship and one of Northern Ireland's most important industrial employers.
Unlike ordinary souvenir walking sticks produced for tourists, this shillelagh was created as a presentation piece—a meaningful gift intended to honor an individual for his service and dedication.
The Irish Shillelagh
The shillelagh is one of Ireland's most recognizable cultural symbols, dating back hundreds of years.
Traditionally crafted from blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), also known as sloe wood, these walking sticks were prized for their incredible strength and durability. Blackthorn naturally develops twisted grain, distinctive knots, and dense root formations that make every genuine example completely unique.
Historically, shillelaghs served several purposes:
• Walking stick
• Symbol of Irish identity
• Gentleman's cane
• Ceremonial presentation gift
• Family heirloom
Throughout Irish history, blackthorn shillelaghs became closely associated with pride, honor, and heritage, making them ideal gifts to commemorate milestones and recognize years of loyal service.
Traditional Irish Craftsmanship
This example displays many characteristics collectors seek:
• Genuine blackthorn construction
• Natural root-ball handle
• Rich dark finish
• Traditional leather wrist strap
• Hand-carved shamrock
• Hand-carved Irish harp
• Brass engraved presentation plaque
One side features the Irish Harp, one of Ireland's oldest national emblems dating back to medieval times and still used today as the official symbol of Ireland.
The opposite side is beautifully carved with the Shamrock, forever associated with Irish heritage and St. Patrick's teachings.
"The Broth of a Bhoy"
Carved into the end of the shillelagh is the charming Irish phrase:
"The Broth of a Bhoy"
Today the expression is rarely encountered, making it particularly collectible.
Historically, "Bhoy" (or "B'hoy") was an affectionate Irish term referring to a spirited young Irishman. The phrase was used as a compliment, suggesting someone who embodied strength, character, humor, and Irish pride.
Its inclusion reinforces that this was intended as a heartfelt and distinctly Irish presentation gift rather than a mass-produced souvenir.
DuPont Maydown Works
The engraved brass plaque reads:
To Bill Irwin
In Appreciation
DuPont Maydown Works
The DuPont Maydown manufacturing facility was established near Londonderry (Derry), Northern Ireland, in 1960, becoming DuPont's first major European manufacturing operation.
For decades, the plant served as one of Northern Ireland's largest employers, producing innovative synthetic materials including neoprene, acrylic fibers, Kevlar®, Lycra®, and other advanced materials used throughout the world.
Maydown Works became known not only for manufacturing excellence but also for its strong workplace culture and employee recognition traditions.
Former employees have recalled that it became customary for retiring or long-serving workers to receive personalized Irish blackthorn shillelaghs engraved with their names as lasting symbols of appreciation for their years of service.
This shillelagh is believed to be one of those presentation pieces, making it both an example of traditional Irish craftsmanship and an artifact of Northern Ireland's industrial history.
About Bill Irwin
The engraved recipient is identified as Bill Irwin.
While the specific recipient has not been conclusively identified, the personalized engraving preserves the history of an individual who was honored by DuPont Maydown Works for his contribution to the company.
Presentation pieces such as this provide a tangible connection to the people who helped build one of Northern Ireland's most significant manufacturing facilities during the latter half of the twentieth century.
Condition
This shillelagh remains in very attractive vintage condition.
The natural root-ball displays age-related shrinkage cracks commonly found in seasoned blackthorn wood. These are typical characteristics of authentic examples and contribute to the piece's originality.
The carvings remain crisp and attractive.
The brass presentation plaque retains a beautiful aged patina.
Leather wrist strap remains intact.
Please review all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

Kristy's Korner Historical Note
One of the things I enjoy most about finding pieces like this is uncovering the story behind them. This shillelagh represents more than a walking stick—it reflects centuries of Irish tradition, the pride of handcrafted blackthorn wood, and the appreciation shown to an employee of one of Northern Ireland's most important manufacturing plants. It is a wonderful example of how everyday objects can preserve both personal memories and regional history.
