Elegant 1940s Dorothy Thorpe textured crystal bowl painted with sterling silver decoration. Organic ovoid shape. Stunning reflective quality either as a centerpiece or propped onto an easel. The dish which may also be considered a platter or shallow centerpiece bowl. It's wafer thin and is unmistakably a collectible Dorothy Thorpe creation. Los Angeles based Thorpe is known for her distinct style of decorating glassware and with silver overlays in both distinct bands at the rim and sometimes bases of stemware and pitchers. Among her other collections are the ombre splash designs that contributed greatly to the "atomic Age" movement of the mid century. Whereas Dorothy Thorpe was known for her precision work in detailing glassware and serveware with expert engraving, the platter on sale might be considered to be a Brutalist departure from her norm and clearly a landmark achievement for this prolific glass artist and designer.
