Early Roots: Portsmouth & Brewing Legacy
-
Brewing in the Portsmouth area goes way back: there is evidence of brewing activity in Strawbery Banke (the old historic area of Portsmouth) as early as the 1600s (c. 1635).
-
In the 19th century, Portsmouth was home to multiple breweries. The Portsmouth Brewing Company (distinct from today’s Portsmouth Brewery) was founded around 1870 (originally as A. Harris & Co, later renamed) and was one of three main breweries in the city (alongside Frank Jones Brewing and Eldredge Brewing).
-
The older Portsmouth Brewing Company produced beers such as India Pale Ale, Cream Ales, Old Brown Stout, Hop Beer, and “Portsburger Lager” among others
-
That original brewery (and its successors) ceased operations around the time of Prohibition (c. 1919) and never came back under that identity
