A monumental work of functional sculpture by renowned artist David Marshall.
This "Grande" model serving tray is a definitive example of Marshall’s signature "Marriage of Metals." Handcrafted in his workshop in Southern Spain, this oversized piece measures an impressive 20” (52 cm) / 11 pound (5 kg) is significantly larger and rarer than the standard 12–15 inch trays typically found on the market.
Artistry & Technique
The tray features a heavy, sand-cast aluminum body with an organic, undulating form. Its most striking feature is the thick, molten brass rim and handles, fused directly onto the aluminum during the casting process—a technically challenging feat that became Marshall's artistic calling card.
Design Details:
• The Finish: The interior "well" is polished to a brilliant silver sheen, providing a stunning contrast to the raw, rugged "pitting" and industrial textures on the underside and edges.
• The Signature: Stamped with the refined square "dm" workshop glyph near the rim, confirming its authenticity as a high-end studio production piece.
• The Style: A masterclass in Spanish Brutalism, blending the raw power of industrial metal with the "human hand" characteristic of 1970s and 80s design.
A Statement Piece
While smaller Marshall trays are often used for keys, a tray of this scale is intended as a permanent dining table centerpiece or a luxury bar service piece. It is viewed by collectors as Functional Art, valued for its rugged elegance and sculptural presence.
David Marshall
David Marshall (b. 1942) is a Scottish-born sculptor and designer who has become one of the most recognizable figures in Spanish Brutalist metalwork. Though he was born in Edinburgh, his artistic identity is inextricably linked to the mountains of southern Spain, where he has lived and worked for over 50 years. Over the decades, Marshall expanded his reach globally, studying traditional carving and welding techniques in Thailand, Java, Bali, and Rajasthan. His work moved from pure sculpture into functional art, including mirrors, furniture, high-end trophies and a notable body of bespoke trophies and awards for private clients and clubs. His pieces remain staples of mid-century modern and contemporary design galleries in New York, London, Madrid, in the Rocky Mountains of Clark, Colorado, valued for their rugged elegance and the distinct "human hand" evident in every casting.
