An exceptional preservation of mid-century modern design and organic, tactile texturing.
This original art pottery vase was handcrafted by the historic manufacturer VEB Haldensleben (GDR) during the 1960s. Shaped in a statuesque, timeless bottle-churn silhouette, the vase features a heavily cratered, sponge-applied "Fat Lava" volcanic glaze finish. The earthy ochre, mustard-yellow, and deep charcoal-brown tones create a stunning moss-like or bark-textured patina that wraps completely around the body.
The Design & Appeal:
• Sculptural Relief Shield: A highly distinctive raised central medallion framed by a ring of stylized green rosettes adorns the front face, creating a striking brutalist focal point.
• Ribbed Modernist Neck: The distinct horizontally ringed neck is a signature trait of classic VEB Haldensleben profiles, providing an architectural contrast to the raw, rugged texture of the lower body.
• Collectible GDR Heritage: This studio piece is highly regarded for its superior clay quality and complex, naturalistic glaze formulas.
