Original vintage reliquary figure from the Kota people of the Mahongwe group from Democratic Republic of Congo / Gabon area. Displayed on black iron stand. This carved wood simple and extremely stylized human body shape was covered with copper and brass sheets as well as woven brass strips which were thought to have longevity and power from the ancestor for whom it was created. These specific figures were also known as guardians as they were used as a symbol of protection in many circumstances. They were also used in various rites, rituals, and ceremonies regarding family and ancestors.
