Vintage original Asante chief stool from Ghana with carved eagles and text reading "freedom and justice" on one side and "for Ghana" on the other. The Asante (or Ashanti) consider these beautiful wood traditional stools to be something beyond places to sit. Great collector piece to be displayed as art or used as a functional seat, foot rest or to display books and objects. These domestic stools originally belonged to a certain individual and only used by that person. When an Akan person sits on their stool, it is believed to absorb something of their essence, a phenomenon that increases with every use. When not occupied, stools are turned on their side so that malevolence cannot seat itself. Some stools are carved especially by grooms to present to their brides to represent solidarity within their relationship. Signs of wear and use with original marks or chipped areas to be expected. Seat height is 13".
