Important Mbete figure from the Kota people of Gabon. This figure was used to sit alongside other ancestor pieces during ancestor worship. Significant items were placed in the carved out back section. These figures were thought to be active guardians with a spiritual connection between the living and the past, and were also used as a symbol to protect the family. Circa early 1900s.
