Authentic Giriama Kigali commemorative post known as Kigango from south east Kenya. Tall narrow carved wood post with traditional geometric pattern design and head figure at top. Beautiful worn white pigment covers the surface with orange natural stained base from previous placement in the earth. These posts were created to commemorate male family ancestors or important tribal members. The star style engravings represent the garments the notables wore and indicate their former social status. Figures are abandoned due to village shifts from past century old practices of slash and burn agriculture. Their presence at the next village location was replaced with smaller figures. Beautiful characteristic signs of age and exposure. Each is sold individually. Mounted on an black iron display stand.
