Important authentic piece collected in the field by Wheelock, representing traditional Burkina Faso Bwa style carving and paint. The striking powerful head of a buffalo with red, black and white vegetable and mineral pigments depict bold geometric patterns and presence. Triangular snout and protruding conical eyes demand attention with large arched horns above. Pierced holes and ropes for attachment and worn areas exhibiting age and use. Most masks throughout the Burkina Faso region are carved from Ceiba pentandra, (known as "cotton tree") wood which is soft and fine-grained. It is very light, which makes it suitable to be worn while used in ceremonies and dance displays. This piece is ready to hang for wall display and if desired also has iron display stand at no additional cost.
