Antique 1920s/30s Jeweled Filigree Evening Bag, Cornflower French Blue Silk Velvet with Raised Stumpwork Floral Embroidery. Features a ruffled silk interior pocket. Excellent frame detail. Measures 7.5" x 7" with a 7.25" chain strap.

  • The Frame is an ornate, filigree metal frame (likely brass or a gold-toned base metal) set with multicolored glass "jewels" or cabochons that mimic emeralds, sapphires, turquoise, and citrine. The jewels are in good condition. Lining is torn on one side as seen in the image, and there are some stains on the lining as well.

  • The Embroidery is stumpwork, or raised embroidery. The flowers and leaves have a 3D, padded effect created by stitching over wool or felt, giving the floral design a lush, textural quality.

  • Most likely from France or Austria -- during the early 20th century, these countries were the primary exporters of high-quality embroidered velvet bags with jeweled frames for the luxury market.

  • Era: The filigree work and clasp style are very characteristic of the Art Deco era (late 1920s) through the early 1940s.
