The 1987 The Spectre series focused on the divine entity's return to Earth in a depowered state and the conflict with his human host, Jim Corrigan. Following the cosmic events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Spectre's immense powers were significantly reduced, and he was forced to re-enter the body of his human host, Jim Corrigan, whose corpse was found in an ancient vase. Occult Detective Work Corrigan, no longer a police detective, worked as an occult-oriented private investigator out of an office above Madame Xanadu's parlor. He investigated supernatural mysteries and murders, often with the guidance of Madame Xanadu and his assistant Kim Liang. Conflict Over Vengeance vs. Justice A central tension was the constant bickering between the Spectre, who embodies divine wrath and desires to punish the guilty in harsh and ironic ways, and Corrigan, who as a human detective tried to temper the spirit's actions with justice and empathy.
